Abstract: Children with autism demonstrate an array of sensory, behavioral and functional difficulties including well documented problems in motor coordination, socialization, communication, attention, sleep patterns and self-regulation. Clinical evidence suggests that these areas of difficulty will respond positively to auditory and motor stimulation, particularly when combined with Applied Behavioral Analysis therapy. This presentation will introduce participants to the functional efficacy of multi-sensory interventions as well as discussing recent research on their effectiveness with children with autism. Presentations are given by three professionals from different organizations, representing three diverse perspectives: neuroscience, research and clinical. The neuroscience presentation is given by an MD (UCLA Medical School) with over 40 years experience as a clinical psychologist. His presentation on this subject is a clear, easy-to-understand look at the neurological underpinnings related to autism, sound and sensory processing. The research presentation is given by an experienced researcher and therapist who has worked with autistic children for decades and published multiple peer review projects. Representing the clinical perspective is a psychologist with ABA Advanced Certification. Her presentation discusses evidence-based sensory tools which can be integrated with ABA to successfully increase adaptive functioning, communication and social appropriateness in children on the autism spectrum. |

Social and Sensory Challenges With Autism: Connecting Neurological Dots |

Abstract: This presentation will introduce participants to the functional efficacy of multi-sensory interventions as well as describe the neurological basis for combing auditory, balance and visual activities. The presentation includes discussion of the neurological and functional connections between auditory functioning, behavior, attention, focus, impulse control and emotional regulation. Further, Dr. Minson will explain how simultaneous, multi-sensory input (auditory, vestibular, visual, proprioceptive and motor performance) improves higher brain function through improved subcortical processing. Dr. Minson�s presentation on this subject is a clear, easy-to-understand look at the neurological underpinnings related to autism, sound and sensory processing. It is relevant for all clinicians and educators working with individuals on the autism spectrum. Ron Minson, MD is one of the world�s foremost authorities on the clinical application of sound. Dr. Minson received his medical degree from UCLA School of Medicine and is board certified in Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Minson served as Chief of Psychiatry for Presbyterian Medical Center and Director of Behavioral Sciences at Mercy Hospital in Denver prior to integrating sound therapy into his psychiatric practice in 1990. He is currently Clinical Director at Integrated Listening Systems. |

Research Supporting Sensory-Based Interventions for Autism |

Abstract: Dr. May-Benson received her doctoral degree from Boston University where she was a Maternal and Child Health Fellow. She has 30 years' experience and is recognized as an international expert in the area of praxis and sensory integration as a clinician, speaker and researcher. Dr. May-Benson has completed numerous research projects related to sensory integration and published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. Current research conducted on the effectiveness of a multi-sensory approach with children with autism will be presented by Dr. Teresa May-Benson, ScD, Director of Research and Education for the Spiral Foundation. Case studies illustrating clinical improvements in children with autism will be discussed. Results of a practitioner survey highlighting positive outcomes in areas of self-control, learning/ attention, sensory processing, motor coordination, social skills, verbal and non-verbal communication skills, mood, and transitions will be presented. In addition, results of a multi-site single-case series double-baseline study on effectiveness of a multi-sensory home program with children with autism on behavior, auditory processing and listening skills, emotional regulation, and sensory-motor skills will be presented. |

New Strategies for Improving ABA Therapy |

Abstract: Dr. Deborah Merritt serves as the primary Autism diagnostician for North Central Oklahoma and provides ABA therapy enhanced with auditory/motor stimulus. Her presentation will summarize differential diagnosis which is imperative to successful treatment planning. Additionally she will outline steps toward successful enhancement of ABA with evidence-based treatment to successfully increase adaptive functioning, communication, processing and social appropriateness especially in situations with time constraints.
The use of auditory and motor stimulation provides a foundation to catapult forward the effective change available through the use of ABA. A strong background in clinical psychology, counseling and ABA along with the experience of parenting both an Autistic and ADHD child have all lead to the development of a treatment regimen which brings about effective, time sensitive, lasting change. Conference attendees will hear how to utilize Auditory and Motor stimulation while providing the treatment of choice for children, Applied Behavior Analysis. As ABA clinicians are having to provide shorter treatment programs to reach children in school, insurance restraints and realistic family time constraints, it is imperative that they learn strategies to continue to provide the best evidence based modalities to families including ABA and Auditory/Motor based stimulus. |
